Equipment(s) frequently used in the housekeeping industry are typically separated into 2 different categories, manual & mechanical.
Manual Equipment
Manual equipment are dependent on the energies and manpower of the housekeeping employees to function efficiently effectively. Both efforts and techniques are commonly required from the employees to ensure a job well done.
Types of Manual Equipment-
Microfiber Cloth
Microfiber cloths are ideal for wiping down smooth and delicate surfaces such as counter tops, toilet bowls, sinks and many others. Microfiber cloths, are typically soft and do not scratch other surface when used to wipe across the surface. They can be washed up to 500 times and are durable.
Abrasives
Abrasives are rough cleaning materials and/or tools used to polish or clean stubborn dirt off of surfaces. They are used indefinitely during housekeeping in the form of sandpapers to scrub the surfaces of wooden floorboards or metal surfaces.
Brushes
Many kinds of brushes with different uses and properties are used thoroughly during the housekeeping process. Examples of such are hard floor brushes, toilet brush, flue brush and feather brush. Cleaning processes such as dusting, scrubbing and brushing are normally done with brushes in a push & pull fashion.
Brooms & Dustpans
One of the most prominent and well-recognized tools are brooms and dustpans. They are used to clean dirt or dust off of hard surfaces for a quick dust up before mopping.
Mechanical Equipment
Mechanical equipment(s) are tools used by the housekeeping employees powered by an alternating or direct power source. Unlike their manual counterparts, they are less intensive when it comes to the need of energies and manpower, but are quite costly to maintain.
Vacuum Cleaner
Vacuum cleaners are used daily to suck up dirt and grit from soft surfaces or even upholstery. Unlike the broom, they can be used on both hard and soft surfaces and are much more efficient. It is normally operated with an alternating power source.
Polishing Machine
Smooth and shiny surfaces typically lose their shine after a period of time. Polishing machines are used intensively to polish up hard surfaces to maintain their shininess. Counter tops, toilet bowls, sinks, marble floors, and many other hard surfaces are polished with a polishing machine. It is able to operate on both alternating and direct currents.
Floorscrubber
Floorscrubber(s) are versatile floor cleaning mechanical equipments that can be used to polish and clean many types of surfaces in one go. Today, they are used in most hotels to clean mats, carpets, floor tiles and hard floors by the housekeeping employees. These are typically operated on a direct power source.
Steam Vapour Machine
Steam vapourizer(s) are used by the housekeeping employees in hotels whenever a deep clean is needed. It works by heating up steam to over 165 degree Celsius and later exhumes it towards the pointed surface. It is ideal for removing bacteria from bathrooms, removing caked on grease or stains and killing bed bugs. It operates on an alternating power source.
